Scholarships

During my counseling sessions, I always mention the possibility of writing essays for scholarship money. For active duty students, scholarship money may provide extra money for education related expenses that are not covered by tuition assistance. Since tuition assistance money is only available for active duty, scholarship money offers dependents another avenue to help pay for their education.

While I often give out information for the various essay-required scholarship opportunities available, I rarely see anyone take advantage of the opportunities. In the almost eight years I have been working aboard a federal installation helping service members, veterans, and dependents go to school, I have not had nearly enough students request assistance in writing essays for scholarships they are interested in pursuing. In fact, one year we had an organization call to ask if we could find one person who was willing to throw together an essay for a $500 award as they had not received one application.

I have had a stellar few who made great efforts to go after scholarship opportunities. Two that I can think of off-hand were able to win large amounts of money to put toward their education. One is the daughter of a retired Marine. She came in multiple times and applied to ten scholarships her first year of college. She was awarded $12,000 toward tuition and room and board. Another was an active duty scout sniper in the Marine Corps. He applied to numerous scholarships prior to separation from the service and was awarded close to $25,000 toward his freshman year. He did the same thing his sophomore year and was awarded over $15,000. He was able to stay off his GI Bill for the first two years of schooling; thereby, saving benefits for graduate school. See what a bit of extra effort can earn?

There are many scholarships that you may be eligible for, give it a shot. Remember, in order to produce the most competitive essay, it is wise to have your writing looked over by someone else prior to submission. Most education centers have specialists who may help with reviewing your writing. A bit of fine-tuning never hurts, and this extra help will allow you to produce your best product and strengthen your chances of winning free money for education. Who doesn't love free money?
